The next night was Saturday, and they had a book day at the Kingshouse, where Jim Crumley's books would be on sale, as well as wonderful book of photography from a local woman, can't at the moment remember their name, that gave a wonderful insight into the fauna and flora around Strathyre. I loved Jim Crumley's books, as he is seen as the best nature writer in Scotland today, and I just love all kinds of books on fauna and flora.
After the exhibition there was to be a cailee, and I asked Anne if I could leave the clearing up to Rosy and young Steward, the kitchen porter, or to be plain, the dishwasher, as I wanted badly to go, so I offered them a small bonus, and they were only to eager to help me out.
So Liz, Hannah and self set out for this do, all three nicely scrubbed up and our lippie on, ready for any excitement that may come our way. It was so nice to be out for a change on a Saturday, as I could never actually get off, and always just caught the tail of all the parties. We had ordered a taxi to come and pick us up, and to bring us back later, and as the government subsidize taxis for pensioners, and both the other two being at that stage in life, we shared my fee, and knew that we would get home safely. The reason for this is that Strathyre had a new policeman, and he was a diligent and concientious officer of the law, and had since he first came, relieved about half of the men of Strathyre of their drivers licences for a few years, and that left the lot a bitty sour, but much more careful!
I was always the designated driver when we went out to dinner, or something like that, and I would maybe have two glasses of wine through the whole night, but with this officer no chances could be taken, as it is nice to have a glass or two of red when partying.
I started speaking to Fiona, the owner of the Kingshouse, and she offered me a job, and also plied me with glass after glass of wine, and it wasn't long before I was nicely sozzled. On telling her that I liked the way the bagpipe player was performing, she made me stand in the front, and told me to have a good look, but I felt so conspicious, while every time I tried to sit down, she pulled me up and commanded me to stand and watch.
But I had a job to come back to the next year, and was ecstatic at the thought of not going back to Anne.
All too soon the Rowans were showing off their red berries, and the swallows started circling above Strathyre, getting ready for the long flight back south, same as me.
